Depeche Mode

Gore meinte: “It means hurried fashion or fashion dispatch. I like the sound of that.”

Der erste Song Dreaming of me wird v.a. im Radio gespielt.

Depeche Mode – a band of my early days – I can detect their former songs at the first beats, the new and current songs are not my cup of tea 😉 just Wrong has convinced me. But every song invites me to search a dance floor or sing the lyrics and scaring my kids…..
This is the reason for a special blogpost for            Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode are an English electronic band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group’s original line-up consisted of Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981), Andy Fletcher (keyboards), and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter 1980–81). Dave Gahan joined the band in 1980 after Clarke heard him perform at a local scout hut jam session, singing a rendition of David Bowie’s Heroes and Depeche Mode were born. When explaining the choice for the new name taken from a French fashion magazine, Dépêche mode (from French dépêche that means here „dispatch“ (from Old French despesche/despeche) or „news report“, and mode that means „fashion“), Gore said, „It means hurried fashion or fashion dispatch. I like the sound of that.“

They have had 50 songs in the UK Singles Charts, thirteen top 10 albums in the UK charts, two of which debuted at No. 1. and they have sold over 150 million albums and singles worldwide, making them the most commercially successful electronic band and one of the world’s best-selling bands in music history.

Depeche Mode drew its artistic influences from a wide range of artists and scenes, such as Kraftwerk, David Bowie, The Clash, blues music, the American grunge scene and Velvet Underground. The typically associated genres includes synthpop, alternative dance, new wave, and alternative rock. The band also experimented with various genres throughout its career, including avant-garde, electronica, pop, soul, techno and industrial rock.

Depeche Mode were recognised in their early years as a synthpop band and were considered teen idols. Following the departure of Vince Clarke, their music began to take on a darker and a gothic tone as Martin Gore assumed lead songwriting duties. Gore’s lyrical artistry has been recognised as encapsulating themes such as sex, religion, and politics, so much so that many labeled the band’s lyrical and musical themes as dark and bleak. In response, Gore stated he feels lyrical themes which tackle issues related to solitude and loneliness present more of a realistic character and are a better representation of reality, whereas he finds ‚happy songs‘ fake and unrealistic. Gore also added; „I’ve never seen our music as being over-dark. I think that there is always an element of hope in our music.“

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?

So we’re different colours and we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me though I’ve done nothing wrong
I’ve never even met you, so what could I have done?
I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another manHelp me understand

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?

And now you’re punching and you’re kicking and you’re shouting at me
I’m relying on your common decency
So far, it hasn’t surfaced but I’m sure it exists
It just take a while to travel from your head to your fist
Refrain

Strangelove, Strange highs and strange lows
Strangelove, That’s how my love goes
Strangelove, Will you give it to me
Will you take the pain, I will give to you
Again and again, And will you return it

There’ll be times when my crimes
Will seem almost unforgivable
I give in to sin
Because you have to make this life liveable

But when you think I’ve had enough from your sea of love
I’ll take more than another riverfull
Yes, and I’ll make it all worthwhile
I’ll make your heart smile

Strangelove, Strange highs and strange lows
Strangelove, That’s how my love goes
Strangelove, Will you give it to me
Will you take the pain, I will give to you
Again and again, And will you return it

There’ll be days when I’ll stray
I may appear to be constantly out of reach
I give in to sin
Because I like to practice what I preach

I’m not trying to say I’ll have it all my way
I’m always willing to learn when you’ve got something to teach
Oh, and I’ll make it all worthwhile
I’ll make your heart smile

Pain, will you return it
I’ll say it again, pain
Refrain
Pain, will you return it
I won’t say it again

Strangelove, Strange highs and strange lows
Strangelove, That’s how my love goes
Strangelove, Will you give it to me

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can’t you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to you?

We always tried to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put you through

Things get damaged, things get broken
I thought we’d manage, but words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn’t know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you

If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it’s your eyes He’s seeing through

Things get damaged, things get broken
I thought we’d manage, but words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I pray you learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in your hearts for two

Things get damaged, things get broken
I thought we’d manage, but words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I’m not going down on my knees begging you to adore me
Can’t you see it’s misery and torture for me
When I’m misunderstood try as hard as you can
I’ve tried as hard as I could
To make you see how important it is for me

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Understand me Understand me
Understand me Understand me

Some people have to be permanently together
Lovers devoted to each other forever
Now I’ve got things to do and I’ve said before
That I know you have too when I’m not there
In spirit I’ll be there

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Understand me Understand me
Understand me Understand me

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

Here is a plea from my heart to you
Nobody knows me as well as you do
You know how hard it is for me to shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue in situations like these

It’s a lot (it’s a lot) It’s a lot (it’s a lot)
It’s a lot (it’s a lot) It’s a lot (like life)

There’s a new game we like to play, you see
A game with added reality
You treat me like a dog, get me down on my knees

We call it master and servant
We call it master and servant

It’s a lot like life, this play between the sheets
With you on top and me underneath
Forget all about equality

Let’s play master and servant
Let’s play master and servant

It’s a lot like life and that’s what’s appealing
If you despise that throwaway feeling
From disposable fun
Then this is the one

Domination’s the name of the game
In bed or in life, they’re both just the same
Except in one you’re fulfilled at the end of the day

Let’s play master and servant
Let’s play master and servant

Come on Come on
Master and servant

It’s a lot (it’s a lot) 7x
It’s a lot (master and servant)
It’s a lot (it’s a lot) 4x

It’s a lot like life and that’s what’s appealing (it’s a lot like life)
If you despise that throwaway feeling (it’s a lot like life)
From disposable fun
Then this is the one

Let’s play master and servant
Come on, master and servant 3x

Reach out, touch faith!
Your own personal jesus,

Someone to hear your prayers,
Your own personal jesus,
Someone to hear your prayers,
Someone who’s there.

Feeling unknown
And your all alone,
Flesh and bone by the telephone,
Pick up receiver, I’ll make you a believer.

Take second best,
Put me to the test,
Things on your chest,
You need to confess,
I will deliver,
You know i’m a forgiver.
Reach out, touch faith!

Reach out, touch faith!

Your own personal jesus,
Someone to hear your prayers,
Your own personal jesus,
Someone to hear your prayers,
Someone who’s there.

Feeling unknown
And your all alone,
Flesh and bone by the telephone,
Pick up receiver, I’ll make you a believer.

I will deliver,
You know I’m a forgiver.
Refrain

Come on and lay with me
Come on and lie to me
Tell me you love me
Say I’m the only one 2x

Experiences
Have a lasting impression
But words once spoken
Don’t mean a lot now

Belief is the way
The way of the innocent
And when I say innocent
I should say naive

So lie to me
But do it with sincerity
Make me listen just for a minute
Make me think there’s some truth in it

Come on and lay with me
Come on and lie to me
Tell me you love me
Say I’m the only one 2x

Promises
Made for convenience
Aren’t necessarily
What we need

Truth is a word
That’s lost its meaning
The truth has become
Merely half-truth

So lie to me
Like they do it in the factory
Make me think that at the end of the day
Some great reward will be coming my way

Come on and lay with me, Come on and lie to me
Tell me you love me, Say I’m the only one

Come on and lay with me (lay with me)
Come on and lie to me (lie to me)
Tell me you love me (love me)
Say I’m the only one (only one) 3x

Grab all they can, After all
Grab all they can, After all

The handshake
Seals the contract
From the contract
There’s no turning back

The turning point, Of a career
In Korea, Being insincere

The holiday, Was fun packed
The contract, Still intact

The grabbing hands, Grab all they can
All for themselves,After all 2x

It’s a competitive world
Everything counts in large amounts

The graph, On the wall
Tells the story, Of it all

Picture it now, See just how
The lies and deceit, Gained a little more power

ConfidenceTaken in
By a sun tanAnd a grin

The grabbing hands
Grab all they can
All for themselves
After all 2x

It’s a competitive world
Everything counts in large amounts
Everything counts in large amounts

The grabbing hands, Grab all they can
Everything counts in large amounts

I’m taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he’s taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I’m taking a ride with my best friend

We’re flying high
We’re watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

I’m taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I’m as safe as houses
As long as I remember who’s wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

We’re flying high
We’re watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground 2x

Never let me down 4x
Never let me down (see the stars, they’re shining bright)
Never let me down (everything’s alright tonight) 4x

Wrong Wrong Wrong Wrong
I was born with the wrong sign
In the wrong house
With the wrong ascendancy
I took the wrong road
That led to the wrong tendencies
I was in the wrong place at the wrong time
For the wrong reason and the wrong rhyme
On the wrong day of the wrong week
I used the wrong method with the wrong technique
Wrong Wrong

There’s something wrong with me chemically
Something wrong with me inherently
The wrong mix in the wrong genes
I reached the wrong ends by the wrong means
It was the wrong plan in the wrong hands
With the wrong theory for the wrong man
The wrong eyes on the wrong prize
The wrong questions with the wrong replies
Wrong Wrong

I was marching to the wrong drum
With the wrong scum
Pissing out the wrong energy
Using all the wrong lines
And the wrong signs
With the wrong intensity
I was on the wrong page of the wrong book
With the wrong rendition of the wrong hook
Made the wrong move every wrong night
With the wrong tune played ‚til it sounded right yeah
Wrong
Wrong (too long) 6x

I was born with the wrong sign
In the wrong house
With the wrong ascendancy (too long)
I took the wrong road (wrong)
